The Sunday Paper: What I'm Loving Right Now

Byredo - I had heard of Byredo before but never used anything until I stayed in one particular hotel in Sydney. Their whole bathroom was decked out in Byredo products, and I became a huge fan as a result. As soon as I got back to LA, I went by their Silverlake store and picked up a body wash and body lotion in Mojave Ghost. The smell is addictive to say the least. I also sampled a few of their fragrances and fell on Sellier as my new favorite scent. I love the aesthetic of the brand and I love the products, but I also love the experience and the way it makes you feel. And I think that’s a huge part about luxury - that experience and feeling you get. Also reading into the background of Ben Gorham, the founder, I felt like there were some similarities with our journey, as he was an athlete before going into the fragrance business and I was also pursuing a rugby league career before veering course and going into fashion.

Erewhon - I recently signed up and became a member at Erewhon. The food is amazing and so is the aesthetic. It’s a luxury grocery store, and again I love the feeling it evokes in the experience they have created. Yeah, $20 smoothies are a bit high but are definitely worth the price of admission. Luxury is about the experience and feeling that you get along with the product.

Aesop - I’ve been heavy on Aesop as of late and recently just picked up a few new additions to my routine, and honestly I look forward to the routine everyday. I love the aroma that the products emit. I’m a big fan of bergamot as a scent, so I definitely lean towards products that have that in it. I also love the aesthetics of the products as well, and being an Australian brand doesn’t hurt either. I picked up the body wash in 'A Rose By Any Other Name' and their deodorant spray, as well as their classic shampoo and conditioner and love it all. I actually find that most shampoos dry my scalp out and cause it to flake, and this shampoo and conditioner didn’t do that so I was pretty excited about that.

Patrick’s deodorant - I’ve had a hard time finding a deodorant that is both natural and actually works, and this one truly ticks both of those boxes. I’m big on packaging too, as I want it to look equally as good in my medicine cabinet as well as being a great performing product. Another Aussie brand also.

Land Rover Defender - I’m big fan of Land Rovers and the Defender is one of my favorites. I love this car. It’s rugged yet luxury, so it’s perfect for me throwing fabric in and out the back of it, as well as kids in and out of it. The design is similar to my design ethos also. A modern take on a classic. I love this car so much I even built a Lego version of it, which took some doing that’s for sure. I also love the color choice of green with a white top. I thought it evoked the royal family vibe and God rest her soul, her majesty Queen Elizabeth. 2 years in with my current Defender and still loving it. Although, it can get a little pricey on gas these days, so I do tend to opt for my wife's electric car on weekends.

Avianne chain - I’ve always been a big fan of a big chain. And over the years, it has become a staple part of my look. So when I got the opportunity to create a custom chain, I knew I wanted it to be something different that had the elements of the classic Cuban chain that I’ve become so fond of. I went for a chevron design and this was for two reasons. One, I love interior design and one of my favorite flooring is chevron flooring. It reminds me of a chic Parisian apartment. Two, the chevrons are a big part of rugby league jerseys, and I grew up loving and playing the sport in my homeland. That is why I dubbed this the ‘Rugby Chain.’ It’s a play on how they have a tennis chain, but this is bulkier and chunkier and with the chevron ‘V’ designs. I definitely put Joe Avianne to the test with this one, as engineering such a chain was not easy to have it sit right. After a few tweaks, he totally nailed it, and I’m love with this piece and cannot wait to release it to the public.

Standard Tee - This tee I do everything in. Dressed up, dressed down it’s a great tee and foundation piece to add to the wardrobe. I love how the neck opens up a little bit wider, as I like to wear a chain. I’m more on the choker style chains, so it shows it off nicely in my opinion. It also comes in a few different forms as well. We offer it in a tri-blend fabric, which is a lighter version. And we also have a heavier weight jersey with an intentionally coarser hand feel than the tri-blend and the thermal versions. Three different tees in three different fabrics all from the same great base, but all drape and come out different just from a different fabric choice.

Velcros - Velcros are my go-to. I love them so much I even made a hybrid version of our High Top Roamer and Velcros, and now we have the Velcro Roamers which I cannot wait to release also. The low top version though is a perfect shoe for summer in my view and is more elevated than a pair of Ultra Boosts, albeit not as comfortable as boost technology but still good all the same. I love the color combos that we offer in these also, and the Python one is probably my go-to right now in both the neon and the ivory.

Brown Venice Trunk - The Venice Trunk has been one of our best-selling items, and this brown color is one of my favorite pieces. And as one friend of mine put it, he thinks it’s the best thing I’ve ever designed. Artistry is in itself simplicity, and these trunks definitely have a simple approach with a lot of intentional details. I love also the way the label in yellow and red, a nod to Formula One racing, plays off the brown also.

Blue Bottle coffee - I am a big coffee lover. But over the years, I cycle between taking a break from coffee (which can be a living nightmare in and of itself) and also doing decaf (which can also be like what is the point?), to drinking tea and then coming back to coffee. I like to change it up for sure. Blue Bottle is actually how I got into drinking coffee, funnily enough. My wife is from the Bay Area, and when we first started dating we would take trips up there together and would always hit Blue Bottle in Hayes Valley. At that time, Blue Bottle wasn't as big as what they are now. They didn't even have stores in LA yet. Now they are all over, and I do love the minimal aesthetic of their locations and their designs as well. Its very minimal and zen, as well as warm and inviting. With a lot of great coffee options in LA, I also cycle around which spots I go to - from Go Get Em Tiger to La Colombe, but right now I am back on Blue Bottle. My go-to drink is the Gibraltar.
