The Sunday Paper: For the Love of Sport

Sport is uplifting, inspiring, motivating, exciting and most of all fun. It brings together people from all walks of life. Sport is entertainment, and to some extent I would consider it a work of art in its own right. Take the great Steve Prefontaine, for example. He likened his performance in a race to a work of art, and that is what he believed. And for me it is hard to argue, it’s a performance piece. Look at Michael Jordan and the way he dominated a game. Everything from the length of the shorts he wore to the sweatband on his arm and most importantly the sneakers on his feet were all part of that art piece in my view. Rightly or wrongly, we have deified the great athlete for his athletic ability, even back to the days of the Ancient Greeks or the Romans. For some people, sport gives their life meaning whether as a player or a spectator. So that is how important it is and how impactful this art form is.

The Sunday Paper: For the Love of Sport

I grew up on this stuff in Australia. I played whatever sport they had going at school from Aussie rules football to rugby, swimming, athleticsyou name it. It was sport that even inspired me from a young age to look to America as a future for myself and all the bright lights that accompanied it. Growing up, I wanted to be like my favorite athletes, I wanted to be like Mike; I wanted to be like David Beckham and some of my favorite rugby players. Now I am happy to be myself, but I definitely was inspired by these guys growing up and still am to this day. And I think that can be seen in the clothes I make today too.

So that is where I am coming from when I design. Luxury sportswear is in my DNA and true to who and what we are about. Coming from a background of sport in Australia and even attending a sports high school, I was driven and I was determined. And when I switched gears to fashion, I had no idea that the two worlds would eventually collide into what we are today. But looking back on my past, it’s definitely a fitting intersection of fashion and sport in the form of art. Simple, yet detailed and for the love of sport.
