The Sunday Paper: Simplicity

July 09, 2022

I believe the simple things can be the most aesthetic. Art in its essence is simplicity. And when you think of this, it may not seem plausible, but bear with me and let me explain. Take how simple and aesthetic Apple’s products are. They are reductionist by nature. You can tell the same level of detail that goes into the product goes into the aesthetics, goes into the packaging and goes into their stores. It’s all about simplicity and functionality. Another stellar example of this is Aesop skincare. I for one love their hand soap, yes, but I think I am drawn to the simple aesthetics of the packaging. I want something that works just as well on my hands and looks just as good in my house. Tesla is another notable mention in this department also, reductionist and simplistic by nature. It’s about functionality and done aesthetically.

The Sunday Paper: Simplicity

Even with our Melrose store, we kept it very minimal and clean but with detail. The floor is polished concrete, the columns are left unfinished and the space is warmed with some wood paneling and contrasted with texture. I wanted a space that was simple, clean and aesthetic, and I think we achieved that. In regards to simplicity, I believe the devil is in the detail. Like a basic tee with a center seam, our Standard Tee, a very simple detail and one that can be seen throughout the collections. There’s not much you can do to a basic t-shirt, so I focus on the details - fit, fabrication and comfort along with center seams as our signature. Simple doesn’t mean boring to me. It is about details that are intentional, noticeable but not overbearing. Our best-selling shoe, the High Top Roamer, is very simple in nature also. The same philosophy mentioned above went into designing this shoe. From the seams to the fit, to the height, to the suede leather and the signature center taping, which is a nod to the center seam detail on our apparel. There is detail to it, simplicity to it, and all this in just the right color combination can really set off an outfit. Even our Venice Trunk follows this design principle of fit, fabrication and detail. Every detail intentional and truly a product grounded in simplicity that the audience responds to. Even in life, you always wish to go back to simpler times and uncomplicate things, and so it is with design in my view.
